Firesheep is a Firefox extension used to hijack web sessions usuall used over WiFi networks. Firesheep doesn’t steal usernames and passwords. Instead it copies session cookies used on authentication websites. These are then used to impersonate the hijack connection.

When logging into a website you usually start by submitting your username and password. The server then checks to see if an account matching this information exists and if so, replies back to you with a “cookie” which is used by your browser for all subsequent requests.

Google Launches Google Drive with free space of 5GB

Today, i am going to post about new Google feature called "Google drive". There are many rumors for weeks now, but Google official announced on company blog Tuesday, the service will integrate with Google Docs and will allow you to access files from anywhere.

Google Docs is now built right into Google Drive, which means you can work with others in real time on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Once you’ve shared content with someone else, you can add and reply to comments on anything (PDF, image, video file, etc.) and you’ll receive notifications when other people comment the items you’ve shared.

Many of us use Rapidshare to share files. Well here is a service that is ready to pay you to upload and share your files.
Easy-Share allows you to share any type of file. You may then post links to share the files with your firends. You get paid when someone clicks on your link and downloads the file. The links can be posted on message boards and blogs and the maximum limit per file is 100 MB.

Skydrive FTP access – Backup files online

Windows Live SkyDrive is part of Microsoft’s Windows Live family that allows you to store and share files online. We had mentioned Skydrive 2 years ago when it offered only 1GB of online storage. Today Skydrive gives you 25 GB of storage absolutely free of cost.

Files stored on Skydrive can be made public or shared with other Windows Live users. You can also use the service to host images or other files. The maximum file size supported is 50MB and files can be arranged into folders with description for each. The main drawback for this service is the inability to use a software to upload files. The only way to do it from their website is by using a simple uploader that can handle only a few files at a time.

Skydrive does not support FTP ! Yes, I know the title said FTP but the method below is the closest we can get to FTP. We had written about Gladinet software which creates a virtual drive on your Windows desktop. They seem to have gone the commercial way. So here is another software that can help you.

Most of us knew about Microsoft’s Skydrive which offered 25GB of free online storage. Skydrive has its restrictions like 50MB max file size and a bad uploader which doesn’t function as we would like it to. The other option was to setup Skydrive FTP like connection that you could use through My Computer to transfer files.

Glide Society has come up with Gdrive which offers 30 GB of free online storage space without any of the restrictions that Skydrive has. It is an advertisment free, cloud computing solution that can be used by upto 6 different people in one account.

The most popular free online storage service is Skydrive, which offers a whooping 25GB of space for free. Now, who is going to manually upload 25GB worth of files through a web browser ! Skydrive Explorer allowed accessing it like a network drive but even that was slow and unpredictable.

Nowadays most offices and schools have started blocking Instant Messenger’s (IM) with firewalls and content filters. I have done the same in my office but there are ways to beat this block. The easiest being using an online web app that allows you to login to your IM service without the need for software.

First you register with the service, choose your preferences and start receiving emails. You will have to click on the advertisers link inside the email for the service to recognise that the email has been read.
This service is almost like a mini Google Adsense but it remains to be seen if RupeeMail will find enough subscribers. Hmm I wonder how much they are willing to pay per email, cuase that wasnt mentioned on their website.

Use Email Templates in Gmail – How to

In our previous post, we were giving away 50 Free Licenses for Comodo Internet Security Pro. To be sure that the licenses were not being sent to fake email addresses, we sent one mail asking the winners to reply to the email before we sent them the license code. So that’s 2 emails per winner X 50 winners = 100 emails to be sent. Copy pasting the template proved quite a hassle but it led me to email templates in Gmail.
How to Use Email Templates in Gmail
Gmail labs has a feature that allows you to make email templates that can be used to instantly reply to common emails.
To Access the Gmail Labs we need to click on the Green Test Tube on the right corner of Gmail. On this page Enable the Canned Responses feature. Click Save Changes.

Now that the Canned Responses feature is available for our use, we are ready to setup some email templates.
Click Compose Mail or open an email you would like to reply to. Enter the message and click on the Canned responses button (appears below the Subject line). Gmail will now save the contents of the message you typed as a email template.

To use the template again in another email, just click Canned Responses and choose the template to insert.

I noticed that the email subject line for my RSS feed was always “TechiePortal”. This does not give any info about what the email is about and the subscriber has to open the email before he can see the post title. Feedburner allows you to change the email subject line.

Feedburner is being used by most blogs to publish their RSS feeds, it also offers readers the option to subscribe to the RSS feed via email. Many users prefer to have emails sent to them because they are not familiar with feed readers. By having good, precise email subject lines, readers will know what to expect when checking their emails. They are more likely to open the email this way.

How to change FeedBurner Email Subject Line

1. Login to Feedburner
2. Click on the Publicize Tab
3. Choose Email Subscriptions from the right navigation menu
4. Click on Email Branding sub menu
5. Now you have the option to change the email title.
6. Change the feedburner email subject / title as required.
7. Adding ${latestItemTitle} in the title will replace it with your Posts title
8. Scroll down and click Save.

If your blog is updated more than once a day, check the “Change Subject when an email has 2 or more items” box. Now you have 2 new commands to use. ${n} shows the total number of items, and ${m} shows the number of items beyond the latest.

How to protect Gmail and Google account with mobile authenticator

Our post on how to get back hijacked email accounts has many people asking how to protect their email account. Since our Gmail accounts contain important and confidential information, protecting it is very important. What can we do to prevent someone from taking control of our gmail account. Google automatically uses https on the login page making it secure but if someone knows our password they can easily change it and the security questions. It takes a lot of effort and time to get the account back.
Games like World of Warcraft have been using mobile authenticators to prevent account theft. Google also has a similar application for mobile phone users. The app can be downloaded from Android Market or iTunes store.
Once you install the application on your phone, its time to setup the Gmail account to use a 2 step verification process for login. Enabling the 2 step verification increases your Gmail accounts security a lot. To make it even more secure, go to gmail settings and under the browser connection, enable the always use https option.

Outlook contacts is widely used to store contact information and is synced with many phones. Phones using Windows Mobile always sync with Outlook Contacts. Now wouldn’t it be good if you could get the pictures are other info from Facebook synced with Outlook ! This app lets you to just that.

Stop Websites from Tracking You

Ever wondered how Google, Yahoo or some other site knew who you were even though you deleted the temp files and cleared cookied ? Yes, cookies were cleared when you cleaned it in your browser, how else could they know ?

LSO’s don’t ask the users permission to store the data on the computer in system folder. Since the data is stored in the system folder, they are protected from deletion. Each LSO offers 100KB of data to be  stored compared to 4KB offered via cookies. They can also send information to their servers without the users knowledge.

Prevent copying files to USB devices

When you run a small company, its important to see to it that your company’s data remains safe. Data theft is very common because anyone can copy files to a USB device and take it with them. Of course we have group policies and IT technicians who control data in big companies but when you run a small operation, these are costs you cant afford. There are a few simple steps which we can take to try and prevent or deter files being copied to USB devices.
These methods are not foolproof but since most users dont mess with a computers registry files, they will never figure it out.

How to Disable USB Port

If USB ports dont work, they cant copy anything to those devices. This is one method thats easy to implement.
Open the windows registry by typing regedit in the start menu. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
Change the value of the START DWORD and set it to 4. To enable USB devices you can change the value to 3.

How to prevent write access on USB disk

What if we dont want to block USB devices, maybe we need to allow files copied to the computer but not vice versa. Then we can disable write access for USB devices.

Open the windows registry by typing regedit in the start menu. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Create a new DWORD, name it as WriteProtect and set the value as 0 (zero). To enable write access set it to 1.
